Value of a Nickel?

With coinflation.com on hiatus, does anyone know the value of a nickel? Copper and nickel are at soaring prices. A Nickel is mostly copper if I remember right.

Its metal value is about 95% of its face. Oh, I see what you mean, its current value today.

It was 95% of face when copper was at 2.95 and nickel at 8.37
Today they are 3.22 and 9.01, respectively

Thank you, I don't know how to convert it to a percentage, but I'm smart enought to know a bargan when I see one.

I'm thinking that they might be worth real money... Is it too early to make that claim?

Afterall, copper is 9% over the old price and nickel 7%- it only needs a 5% overall gain to get to face.

I don't know, but I will tell you I made the leap. I have this really cool 2 gallon jar with a latchable glass lid. I started throwing all the nickels my wife and I get in change into it. Just yesterday, while I was at the bank to get a box of pennies to search I asked if I could have a box of nickels too. They wouldn't give me one because they were running low, but let me have $20.00 worth.

The composition of a US nickel by the way is 25% Ni and 75% Cu.

You do realize that this a pretty startling revelation- I mean, pre-'82 pennies is one thing but all nickels from '45 to the present...

Yeah, it is. I think we are going to see some coin changes real soon, for a few reasons. Obviously, if the prices of copper and nickel stay up or continue to rise, they will be losing a lot of money just minting them. Second, if they do rise enough, eventually even folks who do not frequent these boards will start hoarding pennies and nickels, leading to a small change shortage. And third, and maybe most important, something tells me the gubment wouldn't want people to get used to their money actually having some intrinsic value at this point.
:D

Actually we're talking all U.S. nickels from 1866 to mid 1942, and 1946 to date = .750 Cu and .250 Ni.

Hey, send me all your decent 1866 to 1938 nickels. I'll pay shipping and pay twice their intrinsic value.

What a deal! I'd better go down and tell the local postal employees to get ready for the rush.
